For the first time since 2011, Kurt Busch was in victory lane Sunday afternoon when he held off Jimmie Johnson late in the race at Martinsville Speedway. After a slow start to his season in which Busch failed to finish inside the top 20 for the first four races, the No.41 team has found their comfort zone. The word ‘undefeated’ rarely comes up in NASCAR. Winning two straight races is an extremely hard task to accomplish, but Denny Hamlin has followed in Kevin Harvick’s footsteps and has done just that during SpeedWeeks. Hamlin opened up SpeedWeeks by winning the Sprint Unlimited and now he is two-for-two at Daytona with his victory in the second Budweiser Duel. The wound from last September’s Richmond race will never fully-heal for Michael Waltrip Racing. As much as the team would like to forget their actions from the race, the memory will never fully fade away. However, with the right mindset this team will more than likely move on from the ordeal. MWR is optimistic for 2014.Clint Bowyer is determined to get back to victory lane after a year’s absence and Brian Vickers is set to make his return to full-time Sprint Cup Series racing. A season full of ups and downs was at its highest Sunday afternoon for Jeff Gordon. It had been an eight year dry spell for Gordon at Martinsville. He once dominated this track, but as of late, success has not been present for the four time champion. That all changed with this win, however. Gordon took his first victory of 2013 to keep the championship in sight. Gordon made it to victory lane by keeping his nose out of trouble throughout the day. The Chase contenders were separated from the pretenders last Sunday in an never-ending day at Chicagoland. Chase contender Matt Kenseth’s victory further enhanced his championship case while Chase pretender Joey Logano didn’t come out of the gates hot in his Chase debut. It was only the first race, but a tone was set for the remaining nine weeks. Who can remain a contender will be determined this weekend as the Cup Series takes on the Magic Mile in New Hampshire.
